CICES Annual Dinner 2024

The 2024 CICES Annual Dinner and awards night took place on Friday 20 September, at King's College, Cambridge.

We'd like to thank everyone that attended and supported the event, including special guests, worthy prize winners and of course, our generous sponsors:

Worthy winners

Outgoing president Batsetswe Motsumi handed over the reins to newly announced in-post Alison waston MBE, who outlined her vision for her tenure, with the compelling theme: 'Make Space for Education', including her well-received video introduction.

Chair of the CICES sustainability committee, Michele Victoria, gave a presentation introducing (and inviting feedback on) the recently launched white paper: 'Sustainability and the Civil Engineering Surveyor'

As the drinks continued to flow and a delicious meal was enjoyed by guests, it was time to unveil the evening’s worthy award winners.

In recognition of his sterling work in advancing the profession, particularly in the Hong Kong region, John Battersby was presented with the Institution Medal.

Equally deserving was Peter Hallsworth, who received the President's Medal for his outstanding contribution to CICES over many years.

The Commercial Manager Award went to Mark Phillips, marking his significant contribution to that discipline and the wider civil engineering surveying industry.

And in keeping with the new president's aims to inspire younger people to enter the profession, three shining examples were recipients of the Robin Jones Awards:

  • Campbell Davidson - Robin Jones Award (Innovation and sustainability).
  • Malintha Fernando - Robin Jones Award (Equity, diversity and inclusion).
  • Tammy Nolan - Robin Jones Award (overcoming challenges/ breaking boundaries through education, training & development).

An exciting year to come

At the drinks reception that followed the more 'formal' portion of the evening, Alison Watson summed up her hopes for the coming year:

‘Time spent in education is brief but our influence can be unlimited, as I’ve seen in my everyday work in schools - and our support has never been more important.

‘We must actively engage with and inspire the next generation with the same care and attention we’d give our own children, so the vital role of surveyors in shaping the future of our planet and its people continues.

‘I’m excited about the year to come and hope we’ll join together with one common goal - not just across the institution but throughout our industry - to shine the brightest of lights on our extraordinary world - the built and natural environment.’

And with these inspiring words in their ears, guests either made their way home, to hotels, or into the city centre to continue the night.

See you next year in Sheffield!
