CICES is pleased to announce the appointment of Nicola Clancy as the new Chair of its Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) council.
Nicola, who is currently a managing quantity surveyor at Alun Griffiths contractors, chaired the first EDI meeting of 2026 earlier this month, taking over the role from Simon Navin, Head of Geospatial Services at Ordnance Survey.
Nicola is a highly experienced quantity surveyor who has worked with leading organisations including Costain, Network Rail, and AMEC.
The EDI council plays a vital role in promoting equality, diversity and inclusion across the construction industry and within the CICES membership community by implementing the EDI policy and encouraging staff and members to follow guidelines that aim to create a membership and profession reflective of all parts of society.
Equality, diversity and inclusion is one of CICES' three golden threads, reflecting its central importance to the institution’s mission and values.
Speaking about her appointment as CICES EDI council chair, Nicola (pictured) said:
“I have been very fortunate to have experienced many allies along my journey. Everyone should have a great ally on their career journey, someone who sees the individual, not their difference. However, I am aware that not everyone experiences this, which is why EDI council aims to provide a mechanism to instigate change with my 3-year plan.
" Year 1 is about celebration and connection, recognising the great work our members have achieved. We want to shift mindsets by making people and their experiences visible, so we'll be reaching out to members to share their stories.
“Year 2 will focus on building evidence. I'm particularly interested in exploring the obstacles we face at various ages along our careers, whether it's difficulties entering the workforce or maintaining employment prior to retirement. We'll also review mentoring options that work both upstream and downstream across generations, building on the benefits of intergenerational teams.
“In Year 3, we'll share our research findings, benchmark against other industries, and use what we've learned to influence policymakers. I encourage every member to contact council to offer suggestions and share your experiences. Together, we can influence real change."
The EDI council will be chaired by Nicola over the next three years.
Simon Hamlyn, CEO at CICES said:
"We're pleased to announce Nicki as the new Chair of our EDI Council. EDI is one of the institutions Golden Threads, and Nicki’s exceptional commitment and contributions to the council are critical as she steps into this important leadership role. We thank Simon Navin for his significant contributions and commitment to EDI when he served in the role”.
