On 30 October, members of the CICES team took part in a sustainability day at a local park in Stretford, Manchester, organised by the environmental charity City of Trees.

Staff contributed to a range of conservation activities, including vegetation clearance, path widening and litter collection. It is the second year in a row that staff have taken part in such a volunteering day, with the team volunteering at a park in Urmston a year ago.

CICES' involvement in the City of Trees initiative reflects the institution's ongoing commitment to sustainability and its corporate social responsibility.

CICES works to ensure the HQ is sustainable and has implemented the following sustainable practices, including but not limited to:

  • Energy-efficient electronics in the lift
  • Smart thermostats fitted across all floors
  • Energy-saving appliances such as fridges and photocopiers
  • Transition to refillable ink cartridges
  • Donation of surplus electronics and furniture to charity.

In addition to the above practice at HQ, our Sustainability Committee is responsible for developing and driving initiatives that promote best practice and change in areas relating to sustainability.

This includes - but isn't limited to - reducing the environmental impact of projects and operations, resource conservation, cost savings, early engagement of civil engineering surveyors, biodiversity net gain and social sustainability.

CICES Sustainability Committee members represent the custodians and 'leading edge' of our institution's understanding and application of one of the three 'Golden Threads'.
