CICES has announced the launch of two new awards dedicated to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). This initiative celebrates the individuals actively transforming the civil engineering surveying sector.

By introducing the new EDI Voice and EDI Trailblazer awards, CICES aims to induce a positive cycle of behaviours with the potential to drive systemic industry change.

EDI is already one of CICES' three Golden Threads

In efforts to highlight industry good practice, the move acts as a catalyst for peers to engage, reinforcing positive behaviour through professional recognition. This approach ensures that celebrated work is shared with the wider industry to influence and build momentum across a broader scale.

Simon Hamlyn, CICES CEO, commented:
‘Equity, diversity and inclusion are not add-ons to your job, they are our job.’

The introduction of these EDI awards does not duplicate but instead complements the current CICES awards, ensuring that EDI efforts are seen as a core part of professional development.

Nicki Clancy, CICES EDI Council Chair, said:
‘I am so proud to see the launch of the CICES EDI Awards, this is not only an amazing way to celebrate the great work our colleagues do to make our amazing industry a better place to work but also encourages our peers to engage and implement further behaviour changes. The awards provide a platform to recognise and share good practice, to inspire others and to generate knowledge, which has the potential to influence change across industry.’

Two EDI award categories

The categories are designed to reward both immediate action and sustained systemic change, broken down into the following:

CICES Voice in EDI Award

This award is for those making a measurable impact in the immediate term. It recognises individuals, often early in their EDI journey, who have spent the last year shifting workplace behaviours through advocacy, research or leadership.

CICES EDI Trailblazer

The Trailblazer award honours a long-term commitment to the cause. It is designed to celebrate CICES members or industry professionals who have spent years implementing lasting initiatives and driving systemic change within the sector.

The nomination process allows for both peer submissions and self-nominations.

All entries will be reviewed and voted on by the EDI Council, with an emphasis on tangible, measurable results. To ensure these efforts benefit the entire profession, winners' achievements and success stories will be published in the CICES journal, providing a roadmap for the wider membership.
