Education outreach

CICES recently delivered its first primary school outreach activity as part of a local school's Careers Week.

It was the first time the institution has undertaken outreach activity in a primary school.

Led by CICES education outreach manager, Rachel Hames, alongside volunteers from Severn Partnership, Michael Beevers and Connor Davis, the team spent the day working with all three Year 4 classes at Newall green Primary School, introducing pupils to the exciting world of geospatial surveying.

Engaging activities

Throughout the sessions, the students demonstrated incredible enthusiasm, curiosity and engagement. They asked thoughtful and insightful questions that highlighted both their interest in the profession and their awareness of the world around them.

The outreach day was set up as part of CICES’ ongoing commitment to inspiring future civil engineering professionals.

Pupils had the chance to experience different aspects of surveying in a fun and hands-on way.

Activities included:

  • Measuring and estimating distances, designed to develop an understanding of basic measurement techniques and accuracy.
  • Measuring with a Total Station
  • Real-Time 3D Scanning, helping the students to explore digital surveying by scanning an outdoor space in real time. Together, these activities provided the students with a flavour of the diverse skills, innovative technology and rewarding careers available within the surveying profession.

Reflecting on the day, Rachel Hames, said:

"It was wonderful to see the Year 4 students approaching every activity with such excitement and enthusiasm. They were more than ready to get stuck in and ask some incredibly thoughtful questions

“Young people are considering and deciding their career from a much earlier stage but they can't choose surveying if they can't see it. They need to see it to be it! I'm incredibly grateful that CICES recognises this and understands the importance of engaging with younger age groups to help inspire the next generation."

CICES would like to extend its sincere thanks to Michael Beevers and Connor Davis from Severn Partnership, whose continued support plays a vital role in making education engagement activities like this possible.

A special thank you also goes to Newall green Primary School for inviting CICES to be part of its Careers Week and for giving the team the opportunity to work with such enthusiastic and inquisitive students.
