Representatives from across the surveying industry gathered in London on Friday to celebrate the launch of a new and unique partnership between the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

The new partnership marks a historic moment in CICES’ history, supporting members to access the Chartered Civil Engineering Surveyor designation as well as a new joint membership subscription.*

The designation is available globally to dual Members and Fellows of both CICES and RICS who meet the eligibility criteria.

A joint membership subscription is also currently available to dual Members and Fellows who are based in the UK. (Conditions apply).

The launch event, held at Surveyors House, RICS Westminster, began with welcomes and introductions from RICS CEO Justin Young and CICES CEO Simon Hamlyn.

Both chief executives gave an insight into the milestone partnership, which stemmed from early discussions, initially with the Privy Council and subsequently with RICS, leading to the formation and a working group in 2024 to agree the workings and delivery of the designation.

Past president of CICES and current trustee Batsetswe (Bats) Motsumi then took to the stage and gave an inspiring keynote address.

Bats’ presidential theme was ‘Adding value through collaboration’, and during his time as president, he was very much involved in ensuring the partnership was a success and in drafting the Strategic agreement between both organisations.

During his address, Bats highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing the challenges facing the construction industry.

Sharing key industry insights, including the need for an estimated 41,200 additional workers each year in the UK through to 2030**, Bats emphasised that professional excellence depends not only on technical expertise but also on workforce wellbeing. Drawing on examples ranging from Smeaton's Lighthouse to the Tyneside origins of The Lighthouse Charity, he demonstrated the enduring value of supporting people alongside projects.

Following the keynote address, Dr Anne Kemp OBE, Fellow and Technical Director at Atkins Realis and chair of nima, then led an insightful panel discussion on the benefits of industry collaboration and looking ahead to the future.

Thanks to all our panellists, including Laura Pacey, Chief Commercial Officer at RICS; David Clark, joint member and representative of Cooks Marine Services; James Kavanagh, Director of Land and Resources at RICS and joint member; Marek Suchocki, President of CICES; Simon Hamlyn, Chief Executive Officer of CICES; and Vicky Brown, Communications and Marketing Manager at CICES.
