CICES Americas region chair Duncan Hawksbee has appeared on Surveyor Says!, a leading podcast from the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS).
Duncan, who was appointed CICES Americas region chair in the summer, was interviewed on the popular podcast by Tim Burch.
During the interview, he spoke about his career spanning over thirty years in civil engineering surveying, and how he has valued his CICES membership since first joining the institution as a student member in 1989.
Duncan is a chief of staff at Medjay, a US-based organisational intelligence and software company and prior to this held roles at Trimble.
Addressing the surveying skills gap
On the podcast, discussion focused on what can be done to address the industry talent shortage.
Hawksbee outlined CICES’s strategy to expand student memberships and establish accredited university programs across North America, and also discussed the rapid technological shift toward reality capture, digital twins, LiDAR, and generative AI with Tim.
Concluding that automation and AI will augment rather than replace surveyors, they emphasise that professional organisations must actively update credentials and standards to regulate these expanding digital datasets.
