1. Determine the appropriate grade

CICES has multiple membership grades depending on your qualifications, experience, and role.

  • Student
  • Affiliate
  • Associate Apprentice (ACInstCES)
  • Graduate (GCInstCES)
  • Technical (TCInstCES)
  • Member (MCInstCES)
  • Fellow (FCInstCES)

Select the grade you are eligible for based on your academic credentials and professional experience. See a summary of what each grade allows you to do.

2. Review competency requirements

Each grade has a set of competencies you must demonstrate (general, core, and specialist). You’ll need to show that your experience aligns with these.

If you already hold a professional qualification or possess significant experience, you might qualify for an accelerated route.

3. Register an account & begin application

Go to the CICES website and register as a new user (if you don’t already have an account).

From your account, access the application portal, select the grade and start the membership application.

4. Complete application form & gather documentation

Depending on the grade, you may need to submit:

  • Personal and contact details
  • Academic qualifications / certificates
  • A detailed CV
  • Reports of relevant experience
  • Evidence for meeting competencies
  • Sponsor(s) endorsement
  • Digital photograph
  • Payment of the application fee (if applicable)

5. Assessment & interview

  • Your application will be reviewed against competencies.
  • For the higher grades (Technical, Member, Fellow), you will usually undergo a review interview.
  • During the interview, you may present your experience report and respond to questions about your professional work, decisions, and understanding of the industry.

6. Notification & membership grant

If your application is successful and you meet all requirements, you will be approved for the grade you applied for. You’ll receive confirmation from CICES and gain rights to use the relevant designation (e.g. MCInstCES).
