Membership Grades
Here's a summary of what each CICES membership grade allows you to do, including progression and professional rights:
Student
- Purpose: For students studying relevant subjects (e.g. surveying, civil engineering).
- What it entitles you to:
- Access CICES resources and events.
- Start engaging with the profession early.
- Next step: Progress to Graduate or Affiliate upon completing studies.
Application fee: Nil
Subscription fee: £10.00 (from 1 March 2026)
Affiliate
- Purpose: For anyone with an interest in civil engineering surveying, even without formal qualifications.
- What it entitles you to:
- Participate in CPD events and training.
- Network with professionals.
- Next step: Apply for Graduate, Technical Member, or Associate if/when eligible.
Application fee: Nil
Subscription fee: £137.40
Associate apprentice (ACInstCES)
- Purpose: For individuals completing an approved apprenticeship.
- What it entitles you to:
- Begin your professional journey.
- Use post-nominal ACInstCES.
- Next step: Progress to Technical Member or Member once competence is proven.
Application fee: £75.00
Subscription fee: £137.40
Graduate (GCInstCES)
- Purpose: For those with a relevant academic qualification (e.g. degree) but not yet professionally qualified.
- What it entitles you to:
- Use of post-nominal GCInstCES.
- Access structured training and mentoring.
- Work toward full membership.
- Next step: Apply for Member grade once competence is developed.

Subscription fee: £228.25
Technical (TCInstCES)
- Purpose: For individuals with proven technical competence, especially those in technician roles.
- What it entitles you to:
- Use of post-nominal TCInstCES.
- Have recognised professional standing.
- Eligibility for EngTech registration via CICES.
- Next step: With experience and broader responsibility, move to Member.
Application fee: £125.00
Subscription fee: £256.65
Member (MCInstCES)
- Purpose: Full professional grade for those with technical and managerial competence.
- What it entitles you to:
- Use of post-nominal MCInstCES.
- Voting rights and the ability to serve on committees.
- To showcase your membership and be recognised globally as a highly skilled surveying professional.
- Eligibility to examine and/or mentor.
- Eligibility for CEng or IEng registration via CICES.
- Next step: Apply for Fellow after significant contribution to the profession.

Subscription fee: £339.54
Fellow (FCInstCES)
- Purpose: Highest grade, recognising senior professionals with outstanding achievements.
- What it entitles you to:
- Use of post-nominal FCInstCES.
- Chance to be nominated to the CICES Council of Management and join the institutional presidential chain.
- Voting rights and the ability to serve on committees.
- Ability to demonstrate leadership and impact in the field.
- Eligibility to mentor, examine and serve at the highest levels in CICES.
- Eligibility for CEng or IEng registration via CICES.

New & upgrade applications are welcomed from those who meet the relevant competencies and can demonstrate this during their application and interview process.
