Becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng)
Chartered Engineer (CEng) is a prestigious professional registration awarded by the Engineering Council (UK) through its licensed professional engineering institutions. There are two main routes to achieving CEng status:
1. Standard Route
Typical Requirements:
- Education:
- An accredited MEng degree, or
- A BEng + MSc combination that meets UK-SPEC (UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence) requirements.
- Work Experience:
- Typically 4–6 years of relevant experience, demonstrated through Initial Professional Development (IPD).
- Professional Review:
- Submission of an application evidencing competence based on UK-SPEC.
- A Professional Review Interview (PRI).

Becoming an Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
Incorporated Engineer (IEng) is a professional registration awarded by the Engineering Council (UK). IEng professionals apply current and emerging technologies in the fields of engineering design, operations, and management. There are two main routes to achieving IEng status:
1. Standard Route to IEng
For applicants with approved academic qualifications.
Typical Requirements:
- Education:
- A UK-accredited BEng (Hons) degree in engineering or technology, OR
- A Foundation Degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) plus further learning to bachelor's level.
- Work Experience:
- Documented evidence of professional development demonstrating the IEng competence standards.
- Professional Review Interview:
- Submit a professional application and attend an interview to demonstrate your competence across relevant areas.
Who is it for?
- Engineers who have followed a UK-accredited educational pathway and can provide clear, structured documentation of their experience and development.
2. Individual Route to IEng
Designed for applicants without accredited qualifications but who can demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience.

- Includes an interview to assess both your academic equivalence and professional competence.

- Engineers who have:
- Non-accredited qualifications, or
- No formal qualifications, but possess extensive and relevant engineering experience.
