All applicants are required to provide evidence of competencies across the following areas:
-
General Competencies

Core Competencies (Commercial, Geospatial, Digital)
-
Specialist Competencies (Based on the applicant’s chosen discipline or focus area)
Each competency must be:

Submission of signed competency documents is mandatory, but does not guarantee approval of membership.
It is a critical component of the overall assessment process.
Guides
Guide to the competencies
CICES competencies define the knowledge, experience, and professional ability required for membership, structured into coded units assessed and signed off by a supervisor against clear performance standards.
Guide to the narrative
Applicants on specific accelerated routes must write a clear, 200–250 word narrative for six selected competencies (excluding general), demonstrating how their experience meets core and specialist requirements for membership.
Guide to the optimum standards
CICES uses four graded levels—Appreciation (A), Knowledge (K), Experience (E) and Ability (B) to assess each competency activity, with specific standards required depending on the membership grade sought.
Competencies
General competencies
CICES general competencies reflect the professional behaviours, ethics and transferable skills expected of all members, regardless of their technical discipline.
Core competencies
Each applicant must demonstrate competence in a core discipline, either commercial management or geospatial engineering, in addition to the general competencies and specialist competencies.
Specialist competencies
CICES specialist competencies are discipline-specific skills and knowledge that demonstrate an applicant's expertise in their chosen area of civil engineering surveying.
