Member
A Member is a fully qualified civil engineering surveyor and a voting member of CICES.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Successfully complete the CICES general, core, and specialist competencies.
- Successfully complete the Member review interview.
- Graduate applicants must hold a degree acceptable to CICES (confirmation advised prior to application).
- Mature applicants without an acceptable degree may compensate with additional experience and seniority.
- Have sufficient working experience: typically, graduates need ~3 years, mature applicants ~8 years.
Separate routes exist for:
- ICE, RICS, or other relevant professional body members/fellows. (Reciprocal route)
- Senior applicants with significant experience. (Member accelerated route)
- Associate members before 31 December 2005. (Member accelerated route)
- Academic staff teaching civil engineering surveying. (Member accelerated route)

- An experience report (1500-2000 words)
- CPD records for the last two years
- Signed off general, core and specialist competencies.
- Evidence of prior qualifications.
- The application fee is £195.00
- Subscription fee £339.54 (March to February)
Detailed CV & experience report
- CV should detail education, qualifications, and full career history, including periods outside employment or unrelated work.
- Experience report should describe a representative project within the last five years, highlighting technical and soft skills, problem-solving, team leadership, client and commercial management, and alignment with CICES golden threads: equality, diversity & inclusion, sustainability and digital transformation.
Sponsors
- Must be Members or Fellows of CICES or another recognised professional body (overseas equivalents may be approved).
- Sponsors vouch for the accuracy of the application and may be contacted for verification.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- Records from the last two years should be submitted in any reasonable format.
- Can include skills gained at work, workshops, seminars, courses, reading, or mentoring.
Competencies
- Must be assessed and signed off by a supervisor or manager.
- Competencies represent the knowledge, skills and experience required to qualify as a member.
Member review interview
- Formal interview with 2–3 examiners.
- Applicant presents the experience report (10–15 min) and answers questions on the project, CV, CPD, and broader technical or industry issues.
Review outcomes
Examiners may recommend:
- Grant Membership
- Deferral – additional evidence or report required.
- Referral – specific areas need further demonstration; another interview may be scheduled.
- Failure – Affiliate grade may be offered in exceptional cases.
In cases of deferral or referral, Technical Member may be offered.
