Accelerated routes to membership

There are two main accelerated routes to membership: the academic route and the other professional body & senior applicant route. Details of both of these routes to membership are as below.

Academic route

Eligibility

  • Substantial experience in civil engineering in academia and/or

  • Currently employed in a relevant academic post

How to Apply

  • Complete online application form, with details of two sponsors

  • Principal sponsor’s form (see details below)

  • Digital photograph

  • Detailed CV (see details below)

  • Completed set of general competencies, signed off by a supervisor or manager

  • Academic profile, detailing:

    • Areas of teaching

    • Research

    • Published papers

  • CPD records for the past two years (see details below)

  • Evidence of prior qualifications

  • Application fee: £195.00

Other professional body route & senior applicant route

Eligibility

Other professional body route

  • Must be a Member or Fellow of a similar professional body (see list below)

  • Significant experience in civil engineering or the geospatial environment

Senior applicant route

  • Employed at a senior technical or managerial grade, in a leadership role

  • Substantial experience in civil engineering

How to Apply (same for both routes)

  • Online application form with details of two sponsors

  • Principal sponsor’s form (see details below)

  • Digital photograph

  • Detailed CV (see details below)

  • Narrative (see details below)

  • CPD records for the past two years (see details below)

  • Relevant certificate (Other Professional Body route only)

  • Application fee: £195.00

Sponsors

  • Must be Members or Fellows of CICES or another recognised professional body (see list below)

  • Sponsors vouch for the accuracy of the application and may be contacted for verification

CPD (Continuing Professional Development)

  • Submit records from the past two years in any reasonable format

  • Can include:

    • Skills gained at work

    • Workshops, seminars, or courses

    • Reading

    • Mentoring

CV

  • Should detail:

    • Education

    • Qualifications

    • Full career history

    • Include any periods of unemployment or unrelated work

Narrative

  • Based on six competencies from one specialism only (excluding general competencies)

  • Must include:

    • At least two from the core set

    • At least two from the specialist set (if applicable)

    • Remaining two can be from either set

    • Commercial applicants must include:
      Core Competency – "Techniques and Technologies Employed in Civil Engineering Works"

  • Minimum: Half-page per competency, describing how, when, and where it was fulfilled

Professional bodies accepted (Other professional body route)

The following bodies are recognised for eligibility under the Other Professional Body route:

  • Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS)

  • Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute (SSSI) – Australia

  • Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS)

  • Society of Chartered Surveyors (SCS) – Ireland

  • New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NZIQS)

  • New Zealand Institute of Surveyors (NZIS)

  • Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIESL) – Sri Lanka

  • Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) – UK

  • Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) – UK
